A boat ferrying tourists at Echo-Point close to Soldhara village in Navsari district capsized on Sunday evening. Five people are believed to have been drowned in the incident. Two died on the spot while three succumbed at the hospital where they had been taken for treatment.
In all, the boat was believed to be carrying 10 people from two different families in Surat and Ahmedabad. Among the dead is a one-year-old child.
A rescue operation was mounted and some people were also rescued although the exact numbers are not known.
Echo-point is a very popular picnic spot on the weekends. Police will also investigate what caused the boat to capsize although initial reports said the boat was overloaded.
The rescue operation was also hampered by poor light. Police have registered a case against the coordinator of Echo point Ashok Patel.
