The Surat BJP has changed the name of two candidates for the Surat Municipal corporation seats. The party had earlier announced the names of all candidates for all the seats in all the six municipal corporations.

The two names are being changed due to the age issue with the candidates. Laxman Beladiya who was first announced as a candidate has been replaced with one Naresh Dhameliya. Anita Desai has been replaced with Sonal Desai. Both candidates who have been replaced had crossed 60 years of age.

The BJP had earlier announced that it will not give tickets for the civic body polls to those who have crossed the age of 60 years, had three terms, and were related to the BJP leaders.

The announcement of candidates for the six municipal corporations led to protests by supporters of candidates who did not make the cut.  Ahmedabad, where the party has declared candidates for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) seats, also witnessed some protests.

Former deputy mayor of Jamnagar Municipal Corporation, Karshan Karmur, tendered his resignation from the party on Friday. He was unhappy after the party denied ticket to his family member. Karmur’s resignation created unrest in the Jamnagar unit of the saffron party.

Many BJP workers on Thursday also staged a protest at the party’s district office. They also alleged that the party has fielded many candidates whom they do not know. It was also alleged that the party leadership had favoured “imported candidates” whereas the local party workers have been ignored.
