The Bar Council Of Gujarat (BCG) has once again extended the date for members to pay the renewal fee for the welfare fund. The BCG has now said members can pay the fee till March 31. It should be noted that in the last three years, of the 43,000 BCG members only 22,000 have regularly paid the renewal fee for the welfare fund.
It should be noted that that as per the Bar Council of Gujarat under the Gujarat Advocate Welfare Fund Act kin of a deceased lawyer in Gujarat is paid compensation. This compensation is funded from the Welfare Fund Ticket, membership fee, and renewal fee. This is the only fund that is used to provide aid to kin of lawyers who have died, officials said.
Of the 88,000 members of the Bar Council of Gujarat, only 43,000 have registered for the Gujarat Advocate Welfare fund. The members have to pay Rs1500 every year as a membership fee which is to be paid by September every year.
But given the COVID situation and the fact that courts were not functioning for long, the Bar Council of Gujarat has decided to extend the date for payment of the renewal fee. Officials have said that only those members who have paid the renewal fee will be given the benefit of the fund.
This is the third time that the extension for payment of the renewal fee is being given. Earlier, it was December 31, then again it was extended by two more months.
