A local court in Ahmedabad has denied bail to a truck driver who is accused of bringing a consignment of 380 boxes of liquor without a valid legal permit in Gujarat. The court while denying the bail application of the accused Gurpreet Sangar observed that although the charge sheet has been filed in the case, no new grounds have been mentioned in the bail application. Hence, the court was not inclined to grant bail to the accused.
Going through the police investigation, the court said that it was a pre-planned act by several people living outside Gujarat and within the state to bring alcohol to Gujarat. Prima facie the applicant seemed to be involved in the offence.
The public prosecutor argued before the court that the accused was arrested with liquor worth Rs13 lakh. The consignment of 380 boxes of liquor was seized from his truck. Although the police had directed the truck to stop, the driver didn’t stop and instead ran away. The police gave chase and arrested him. If the accused is released on bail, he may escape, the counsel argued.
The advocate appearing for the accused submitted that the applicant is not a history-sheeter and this is his first offence. The truck driver did not know about the presence of liquor in the consignment in the truck. The trial of the case will not begin soon and hence the bail should be granted.
What is the liquor case?
Mangal Singh from Chandigarh had sent a liquor consignment to Gujarat in the truck. The truck driver without any legal permit for liquor entered Gujarat and was intercepted by the police. Instead of stopping he drove away and the cops gave him chase. He was later nabbed and arrested.
