The BJP has given tickets to 31 Muslim candidates for the civic body polls in Bharuch. This is being seen as an impact of the entry of AIMIM in Bharuch polls where the party has tied up with the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) to fight the elections.
The election for nagarpalikas, panchayats, and municipalities in the state is scheduled for February 28.
With the entry of AIMIM in Gujarat politics, the Muslims in the state now have an option other than the Congress. The BJP had not bothered to give a ticket to any Muslim candidates in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation polls.
Those in the know said the party has given tickets to 31 Muslim candidates in the Bharuch district, an unusually high number as it is afraid of the impact of the BTP-AIMIM alliance in the state.
BJP says not worried about AIMIM-BTP alliance
The BJP has however on its part said that the new alliance will not impact its performance. Earlier BTP leader Sandeep Vasava and 300 workers of the party had joined the BJP. The Saffron Party has said the alliance is of no significance to it.
District panchayat election head Marutisinh Atodaria has said that it is the first time that the BJP has given so many tickets to Muslim candidates in Bharuch.
Bharuch has a dominance of tribal and Muslim voters. Earlier, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi launched his party’s first election campaign in Gujarat at Bharuch.
Owaisi during his time in Bharuch called the BJP and Congress as “mamu” and “bhanja”. He said the two parties wanted to keep Muslims, tribals, and other communities in slavery.
