AIMIM may dent Congress’ prospects in assembly elections too

The election results for the six municipal corporation elections saw the emergence of AAP and AIMIM in Gujarat. In Surat, AAP pocketed 27 seats while the AIMIM won seven seats in Ahmedabad. In the latter earlier all seats won by the AIMIM used to go to the Congress. Now, it is being speculated that AIMIM’s entry will further dent the fortunes of Congress in the assembly elections.

If Owaisi’s tie-up with BTP also yields results in Bharuch and other places in the local body polls then the AIMIM will have an impact in the assembly elections.

The Congress has so far cornered the votes in Muslim-dominated seats but with an alternate option in the AIMIM, the Congress may not have it easy.

After the victory in AMC polls, Owaisi met the seven winners in Ahmedabad at a hotel. He is already preparing the plan for a plunge in the assembly polls. AIMIM’s entry may impact Congress fortunes in Jamalpur, Bapunagar, and Khadia areas in Ahmedabad.

The party has also put up 20 more candidates for the taluka and district panchayat elections in Modasa and Godhra Nagarpalika. Both Godhra and Modasa have a large number of minority-dominated localities.

Party chief Assadduddin Owaisi had after the victory said the party won’t allow those in AMC to ignore the development of Muslim-dominated areas.
