The Gujarat government has decided to give in-principle approval to seven universities in the state. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani.
The seven universities that will be given the in-principle approval as Centre of Excellence are Nirma University, Charusat University, Ahmedabad University, Marwadi University, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum Uuniversity (PDPU), CEPT, and DAIICT.
Once declared as Centre of Excellence the universities will come up with an action plan to ensure that they are among the world-class universities.
The decision will help further improve the quality of education in Gujarat and give it a global touch. It will also lead to the creation of global infrastructure in the universities including hi-tech student-friendly classrooms, best faculties, library among others.
The Gujarat government had earlier begun a Study in Gujarat campaign to encourage more students from outside Gujarat and India to choose the state as a higher education destination. The present decision will also give a boost to the campaign.
What the universities will do
Rupani said the Centre of Excellence tag will encourage the universities to be world-class institutions and the decision will give a boost to higher education, research, and start-ups in the state. It will also help bring the best practices in education to students of Gujarat.
The state has also asked a committee headed by education minister Bhupendrasinh Chaudasama and vice-chancellors of the seven universities to study the top 10 Indian and global universities and come up with an action plan as part of the Centre of Excellence initiative.
A report will be submitted about the same in the next two weeks.
