Five members of a family in Bhagatpura, who were killed in a freak road accident in Surat on Tuesday, were cremated on Wednesday. The village is in the Kushalgarh sub-division of Banswara district which borders Gujarat. A large number of tribals from both Banswara and Dungarpur, another tribal district, work as labourers or as domestic servants in Gujarat.
The five members of the tribal family of Kela Bhai that were cremated included his son Mukesh (25) and two daughters Manisha (19) and Vanita (17). His daughter-in-law, Lila (22), and child Tejal (4) were also killed in the accident.
Kela Bhai is now left with a wife and a son. Mukesh had gone to Surat 20 days ago with others from the village to work as labourers. The others who died in the accident belong to Gararkhora, Kherda, and Maska villages.
Kela Bhai who lives in extreme poverty worked in Gujarat as a labourer. The family had been to Surat earlier too after the construction industry opened up following COVID.
A day before his death, Mukesh had told his mother that he would send money home.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs2 lakh for the kin of each of the deceased and Rs50,000 for the injured.
