37 children rescued from child labour in various units in Danilimda


A joint effort by the anti-trafficking squad and social organizations have helped rescue 37 child labourers from several small units in the city in Danilimda.

The children who were rescued were in the age group of 12 to 16 years and cops have begun an investigation against 10 people associated with the incident.

The anti-trafficking squad got a tip-off that several units in Danilimda were employing children as workers. The squad along with social organisations raided five to seven such units.

Units manufacturing jeans and dyeing units were among those that were raided. In all 37 children were found working in these units. The kids were brought from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha among others to work in these units.b

The kids were being paid Rs5000 to Rs12000 for 12 hours of job and it is believed that several of them were mistreated at work. Cops are further investigating the matter.

Child labour in Gujarat

The Gujarat Assembly had in September passed the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) (Gujarat Amendment) Bill, 2020, which doubled the fine to Rs 1 lakh for those caught employing children.

A report published by The Hague-based child rights organization, Global March Against Child Labour, said that Gujarat had the highest number of tribal children working in sugarcane fields and that it also had the largest number of unpaid child labourers in such work.

The report titled Global March Against Child Labour studied child labour and gender dimensions in the sugarcane supply chain in India and covered Gujarat, Maharashtra Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. The report said that in Gujarat, 59.2% of child workers are unpaid.

In the year 2019, 276 children were rescued from child labour of which 149 were outside the state.
