Gujarat Order: Salary cannot be deducted in lockdown, nor can be dismissed

Gujarat govt warns businesses of legal action for retrenchment, pay cut during lockdown

At a time when there is a huge uproar over the problems faced by migrant workers and the economic consequences of the lockdown on the salaried class, the Vijay Rupani-led Gujarat government has come to their rescue.

It has warned factory owners of serious action if they retrench their employees or cut their salaries during the lockdown period. The government has clarified that violation of its diktat may land the factory owners in jail for one year.

The state government has already issued a notification in this regard on Thursday. CM secretary Ashwini Kumar said the notification will come to the rescue of 18 lakh workers, 25 lakh labourers working under registered contractors, and another 12 lakh employees working in shops.

Kumar said: “No company or factory owner can opt for a retrenchment of employees during the lockdown period. Companies will be liable to pay the full salaries of employees. Those who will violate these directions will face action under the Disaster Management Act”.

Notably, the Gujarat government has taken these measures at a crucial time when thousands of migrant workers are forced to return to their hometown amid the coronavirus pandemic.
