The Gujarat government has put on hold a notification to reduce the grade pay of primary teachers. The decision came following a meeting between the state government and the teachers’ union.
Earlier, three rounds of meetings were held between the Gujarat education minister and the union that represents 65,000 primary teachers in the state.
The government in a notification announced a reduction in the grade pay for primary teachers hired after 2010 from Rs4,200 to Rs2,800. This reduction was made without consulting the teachers.
This, teachers claimed, has resulted in a loss of Rs10,000 per month for the teachers
The primary teachers union has been fighting the government on various issues for quite sometimes.
The COVID-19 situation meant they could not take out a rally or protest but they have been putting up their problems via social media. They have also found support form the opposition Congress in their fight.
