Gujarat: Congress, BJP, AAP to fight it out in Gandhinagar elections on Sunday

  • Regular elections for Thara and Okha municipalities, by-elections for vacant seats in Ahmedabad, district and taluka panchayats of Gujarat, too, on Sunday

Gandhinagar: Several cities of Gujarat will be abuzz with voting activity on Sunday. Elections for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation and Thara and Okha municipalities as well as by-elections to seats lying vacant in a couple of others cities are scheduled to be held on Sunday.

Congress, BJP and AAP will fight it out for the 238 seats that are up for grabs. In Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation alone, 161 candidates will fight for 44 seats. These include 44 candidates each from BJP and Congress, 40 from AAP, 14 from Bahujan Samaj Party, 2 from Nationalist Congress Party, 6 from other parties and 11 independent candidates.

Besides this, by-elections will be held for 2 seats of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and 1 sat of Jamnagar Municipal Corporation, for which 10 candidates are in fray. Of these, 3 each are from BJP, and Congress, 1 from NCP, 2 from AAP and 1 from another party.

BJP candidates have been declared unopposed winners on 4 seats of ward number 3 in Thara and on 2 seats of ward number 8 of Okha municipality.

A total of 205 candidates are in fray for 78 seats in Thara, Okha and Bhanwad, of which 78 are from BJP, 72 from Congress, 52 from AAP and 3 independent.

Against 8 seats left empty in various district panchayat, there are 24 candidates in the race.

For the elections on Sunday, 482 booths have been declared sensitive. Police deployment has been at all places. A total of 3,933 personnel will be on duty at all booths, while higher deployment will be made along with police patrolling at the sensitive ones
