The Gujarat Congress has announced its first list of candidates for the local body polls that is round-the-corner. The list of candidates has been announced for five municipal corporations—Vadodara, Surat, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Rajkot. The list of candidates for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is likely to be announced soon.
The party leadership held a series of marathon meetings to select candidates for the local body elections, especially when AIMIM and AAP are also going to contest the polls. The entry of AIMIM in Gujarat politics has also rattled the Congress leadership as it fears a division of Muslim votes that will further made winning polls an uphill task for the party. Also, several Congress workers have ditched the party to join AIMIM—an indication that all is not well in the grand old party.
Declaration of candidates
With just a few days left for the elections, Congress declared its first list of candidates for five municipal corporations. It has announced 53 candidates for Surat Municipal Corporation, 27 candidates for Jamnagar Municipal Corporation, 22 candidates for Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation, 22 candidates for Rajkot Municipal Corporation and 20 candidates for Vadodara Municipal Corporation.
As far as the Surat Municipal Corporation is concerned, Congress has declared candidates for wards 1-10, 14, 17 and 19-26. For Jamnagar, the party has declared candidates for wards 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12 and 15. For Bhavnagar, candidates have been declared for wards 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. So far, Congress has declared candidates for 21 seats in Bhavnagar.
Similarly, Congress has declared candidates for wards 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13-17 for Rajkot Municipal Corporation. For Vadodara, the party has declared its candidates for wards 1-4, 7, 9, 11, 13, 16, 17 and 19. Notably, out of the 20 candidates declared for Vadodara Municipal Corporation, seven candidates have been repeated.
