Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani resigns after 5 years at helm of affairs

  • He met the Governor on Saturday to hand over his resignation

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani resigned from his post on Saturday. He met Governor Acharya Devvrat to hand over his resignation, after which he briefed the media about his decision.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for trusting him and BJP national president JP Nadda for his guidance. He also thanked his compatriots in the party and in the government for their support.

Rupani denied any compulsion to resign and said that he had done so willingly. He said that party workers were given different responsibilities at different times. He said he would be ready to take up any responsibility that the party deemed fit for him.

“This is a relay race. I ran for 5 years. Now I am handing it over to another person,” Rupani said, while addressing mediapersons.

He called it a decision taken in the “larger interest” of the state.

While the actual reason for Rupani’s resignation is not immediately clear, it comes just ahead of the crucial Assembly elections next year.

Recently, the state government had celebrated the completion of five years of Vijay Rupani as the CM of Gujarat.

Rupani was first elected to the Assembly in a bypoll necessitated by the regignation

He has been serving as the CM in the BJP-led state government since August 2016. Prior to that, he was the state BJP president for a few months. Rupani, an MLA from Rajkot (west), succeeded Anandiben Patel.
