Gujarat Civic Elections: Reservation for mayoralty announced

With the local body elections around-the-corner, all political parties who have fielded their candidates are trying their best to woo the voters. Elections will be first held in the six municipal corporations in the state on February 21 and the counting of votes will be carried out on February 23.

Now, the urban development department has announced the reservation of candidates for mayoral positions in the six municipal corporations in the state.

What is the announcement?

As per the announcement made by Gujarat’s urban development department, the five-year tenure has been divided into two halves, and reservation for different categories is there for these two halves.

As far as Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is concerned, the first half, or the first two-and-a-half-year, has been reserved for a SC male or female candidate for the post of mayor. The remaining half has been reserved for women candidates.

In Surat Municipal Corporation, the first half of the five-year tenure has been fixed for women candidates and the remaining half is reserved for general category candidates. Notably, of the 120 seats in Surat Municipal Corporation, 50 per cent of the seats are reserved for women candidates.

For Vadodara, the first half is reserved for general category candidates and the remaining tenure is reserved for women candidates.

As far as Rajkot is concerned, only an OBC candidate can become a mayor during the first two-and-a-half-year, whereas the remaining tenure has been reserved for women. In Bhavnagar, the first half is served for women candidates and the remaining half is reserved for the OBC category. In Jamnagar, the first half is reserved for women and the remaining tenure is reserved for SC category candidates.

Local body elections in Gujarat

The local body elections in Gujarat will be held in two phases. In the first phase on February 21, elections will be held for municipal corporations. The results for the elections will be declared on February 23.

In the second phase on February 28, elections will be organised for municipalities, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats. The results for the second phase will be declared on March 2.
