Gujarat civic body polls: BJP does a clean sweep again, Modi, Shah thank voters


The BJP registered a resounding victory in the second phase of civic body polls in Gujarat. The party won with a resounding majority in the taluka, district panchayat, and nagarpalika elections that were held on Sunday.

Though counting was still on, data released up to 7 pm showed that the BJP was ahead in all the 31 district panchayats. It was also leading in 75 of 81 municipalities and 196 of 231 taluka panchayats.

Earlier during the municipal corporation elections too, the BJP had put up a stellar performance sweeping back to power in all of them.

New entrants like AIMIM and AAP put up a good show picking up seats in the rural areas mostly at the cost of the Congress.

Gujarat BJP chief CR Patil said the victory was a reflection of the hard work done by the party for the welfare of the citizens. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the foundation has been laid for the party’s victory in the assembly election too.

Modi, Shah tweets about BJP victory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted about the victory. “Results of the Nagar Palika, Taluka Panchayat, and District Panchayat polls across Gujarat give a crystal clear message- Gujarat is firmly with the BJP’s agenda of development and good governance. I bow to the people of Gujarat for the unwavering faith and affection towards BJP,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

“People of urban and rural Gujarat have sent out a unanimous message. I appreciate the pro-people administration of Gujarat government and the tremendous efforts of the BJP workers. Our party shall always work for the development of Gujarat,” the Prime Minister also tweeted in Gujarati.
Union home minister Amit Shah also tweeted congratulating party workers and said that the results show that the BJP continues to rule the hearts of Gujaratis.

The second phase of civic body polls in Gujarat and candidates were elected unopposed on 237 seats. The BJP fielded 8,161 candidates, Congress 7,778, and the Aam Aadmi Party 2,090 for the 8,235 seats.
