Shahbaz Sheikh, Ahmedabad: As the BJP and Congress fight it out in the bypolls for eight seats in the assembly, for each party, victory is needed for different reasons.
The BJP, which has always maintained that it did not poach the Congress MLAs (the election to the eight seats were necessitated after eight Congress MLAs resigned from the party ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls) and that they came on their own.
The BJP has given tickets to five of the former Congress MLAs who joined the Saffron Party in its bid to ensure that they have a shot at winning these five seats.
For Congress, it is a matter of prestige to win the eight seats and perhaps teach the turncoats and BJP a lesson.
But between the Congress and BJP, it is also a do or die situation for the former. As far as the BJP is concerned, winning any of the eight seats in bypolls will mean it will help boost its numbers in the Assembly. So from the Saffron Party’s point of view, it stands to gain more irrespective of how many seats it wins in the bypolls.
The bypolls to the eight seats will be held on November 3. Both Congress and BJP have claimed that they will sweep all the seats.
The election-related meeting of the BJP has already begun and was attended by Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, Gujarat BJP president CR PAtl and general secretary Bikhu Dalsaniya.
Sources in the know said a survey by the BJP has revealed that it will lose five of the eight seats, and this has got the party worried. As a result, the party has decided to focus its entire strength on four seats.
Limdi continues to be a hot potato for both Congress and BJP as there are too many claimants. The BJP is yet to announce its choice of candidate for the seat although it has announced names for seven other seats. The Congress, meanwhile, is holding its cards close to its chest and has so far not made any announcements.
Apart from BJP and Congress candidates, 100 candidates have already filed their nomination forms for Limdi. In a record of sorts, over 100 unemployed youth under the leadership of PAAS leader Dinesh Bambhaniya filed nominations from the seat.
