Gujarat: BJP wins 41 of 44 seats of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation

Ahmedabad: The much-awaited results of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections are out. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a clean sweep here, winning 41 out of 44 seats in the capital.

The elections had been held on Sunday, October 3. Besides GMC, polls and bypolls had been held for several local bodies in Gujarat. There were 281 seats for which elections were held.

Of the remaining three seats in Gandhinagar, two went to Congress and one to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)

This is the first time the BJP has scored a clear electoral victory in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections.

Early in the day, the saffron party was leading in Gandhinagar when the voting progressed. Coming just ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections, this win will be a major morale booster for the party.

Later, addressing party workers at the Gujarat BJP headquarters Kamalam, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel urged the winning candidates to dedicate their efforts to addressing and solving people’s issues.

On the other hand, Congress which had hoped for a better performance was in for big disappointment. The results are also a dampener for the AAP, which was looking at repeating its performance in Surat Municipal Corporation elections in Gandhinagar earlier this year. AAP is gearing up to contest all 182 Assembly seats next year. The outfit is believed to have eaten into Congress’ votes, further hurting its performance.

The BJP has also won two seats of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation that went to the polls on Sunday. It has also scored a near sweep in by-elections to different municipalities and panchayat seats.
