The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has nabbed a close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Abdul Majid Kutty, in connection with a 1996 RDX explosives case which was meant to carry out blasts on Republic Day in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. He was arrested from Jharkhand where he was living with a fake identity.
Kutty, who was also close to several underworld gangsters, fled to Bangkok and from there to Malaysia in 1996 after the explosives consignment was seized in Mehsana. He returned to India after many years and was living in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur.
As per the case details, Dawood Ibrahim smuggled explosives from Pakistan to Gujarat through Rajasthan’s Barmer border in 1996. Mehsana police seized 4 kg RDX, 10 detonators, Pakistan-made automatic pistol and 10 Chinese-made explosives worth Rs 2.50 crore, including 125 pistols, 113 magazines and 750 cartridges.
Following the seizure of the consignment, Gujarat Police arrested Mohammad Fazal Mohammad Harnat Pathan of Dungar Pada in Ajmer of Rajasthan. Qureshi Anwar alias Pappu Akhtar and Shakeel Ibrahim Qureshi of Mumbai were also arrested. The names of Abdul Majeed Kutty, Dawood and Abu Salem also came to the fore during the investigation.
Gujarat ATS DIG Himanshu Shukla and DYSP KK Patel got information that Abdul Majeed Kutty is currently living in Barinagar near Telco Mosque in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, under the name of Mohammad Kamal Mohammad Rashid. KK Patel arrived at the spot with his team and the accused Abdul Majid Kutty alias Mohammad Kamal was picked up.
Kutty’s entry into underworld
According to police, Kutty was born in 1962 in Mahim, Mumbai. Kutty’s father, who studied up to class 10, died in 1978. Kutty’s father ran a medical store. After the death of his father, Kutty moved to Dubai where he worked as an aluminum section glass fitter till 1984 and then returned to Mumbai.
In a religious congregation in Mumbai, he came in contact with underworld don Dawood, his brother Anish Ibrahim, Tiger Memon, Abu Salem, Mohammad Dosa, Chhota Shakeel and Mustafa Dosa. With the Dawood gang, Kutty was involved in gold smuggling and customs theft and was kept on travelling to and from Dubai.
Three other accused, who were caught in the explosives consignment case, were earlier sentenced to life imprisonment by the court.
