At least 24 people were injured in a massive explosion in a chemical factory in Bharuch district of Gujarat on Tuesday.
Following the blast, fire broke out in the factory premises at around 2 am in the United Phosphorous Limited’s unit in Jhagadia industrial area, police said.
Notably, the factory is involved in the manufacturing of chemicals used in manufacturing medicines.
The explosion that happened in the factory was so loud that it was heard by people living 10 km away. The explosion also shattered the window panes in the nearby areas resulting in panic among people.
The blaze following the blast resulted in the entire area engulfed in smoke.
Injured shifted to hospital
Following the incident, government agencies immediately swung into action and reached the site for rescue and relief operations. Over 15 fire tenders were deployed at the site to douse the flames and the fire department was able to bring the blaze under control by 6.30 am in the morning. The cause of the fire is yet not known.
Rescuers have not been able to enter the unit due to excessive heat in the premises, but they are still trying to get in, an official said.
Meanwhile, the injured were shifted to hospitals in Ankleshwar and Bharuch. Around 12 injured persons were discharged from the hospital after primary treatment.
