Gujarat govt orders 1.5 cr vaccines from Serum Institute, Bharat Biotech

The Gujarat government on Sunday announced that it has ordered 1.5 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines from Bharat Biotech and Serum Institute to smoothly carry out the immunisation drive for people aged 18-45. The jabs will be administered to people belonging to this age group free of cost.

The decision has been taken following a meeting of the core committee headed by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

The government said out of the 1.5 crore vaccines, 1 crore vaccine have been ordered from Pune-based Serum Institute of India that manufactures ‘Covishield’—a jab developed jointly by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The remaining 50,000 doses have been ordered from Bharat Biotech—the company that manufactures Covaxin.

In a bid to ensure the success of the immunisation campaign, Rupani has ordered officials to expand the campaign at the taluka level.

According to the Union health ministry data, Gujarat is one of the leading states as far as immunisation is concerned and so far 1.14 crore doses of the vaccines have been administered in the state. Of it, 94.96 lakh people have been administered the first dose of the vaccine, whereas 19.40 lakh people have been given the second dose of the vaccine.

Gujarat not the first state

Gujarat is not the first state to announce free COVID-19 vaccines for people.

Apart from it, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Haryana have promised free vaccines for all adults.

COVID-19 status in Gujarat

Gujarat has reported 14,296 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours ending 5 pm on Sunday. The addition of the fresh cases has taken Gujarat’s total tally past 4.96 lakh.

157 deaths were reported in the state in the past 24 hours. The fresh fatalities have taken Gujarat’s COVID-19 related death toll to 6,328. While 29 deaths were reported each from Ahmedabad, Surat reported 27deaths. 18 deaths have been reported from Vadodara, 14 deaths have been reported from Rajkot and four deaths from Surendranagar. Gandhinagar reported six deaths, Jamnagar reported 13 deaths and Bharuch reported four deaths.

Of the 14,296 fresh cases reported on Sunday, 5,864 cases have been reported from Ahmedabad, 2,103 cases have been reported from Surat, 760 cases have been reported from Vadodara, and 289 cases have been reported from the state capital Gandhinagar.

This apart, Rajkot has reported 676 cases, Bhavnagar has reported 379 cases, Mehsana 598 cases, and Jamnagar 674 cases.
