The Gujarat government has announced that it will distribute foodgrains for free for the poor as the state battles COVID-19 pandemic. This is the third time, since the pandemic began, that the government is providing foodgrains for free for those in need.
The state in a release said that the 68.71 lakh beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) will be given foodgrains for free for the month of June. Wheat, rice, sugar and salt will be available from the 17,000 PDS approved shops in the state as per the announcement.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana beneficiaries will receive 3.5 kg of wheat and 1.5 kg of rice per person and 1 kg of chickpea per household for the month of June free of cost.
Earlier, in the month of April, the government had under the NFSA offered 68 lakh beneficiaries 36.18 lakh quintal of food grains worth Rs802 crore during the lockdown.
The foodgrains will be made available in shops from June 15 onwards.
In all, 36.87 lakh quintal food grains are expected to be distributed in June.
