Gujarat government on Thursday announced a slash in prices charged by private laboratories for COVID-19 testing in the state. Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel who also holds the health portfolio announced that from now on private laboratories in the state can only charge Rs2500 per test when the samples are collected at the laboratory itself.
In case, the samples for COVID-19 test are collected at home or hospital of a suspected patient, the laboratories can charge Rs3,000. It should be noted that until the government capped the price, the laboratories charged Rs4,500 per test when the sample was collected at the laboratory itself.
As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across India, several states had capped the testing prices. There was a growing demand to apply similar caps for testing in Gujarat too. The cap in prices comes after the government removed restrictions on testing by private laboratories some days ago. Now anyone can get tested for COVID-19 in the state provided the testing is recommended by a MD physician.
Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana are some of the states that have capped the price of COVID-19 testing in private laboratories.
