The Gujarat forest department has clarified that a video of lions drinking from a water source is not from the state. A video has gone viral on social media platforms showing a pride of lions coming one after another to drink at a water source. The number of lions approaching the water source is more than ten.

Several people have retweeted the video claiming it was from Gir Sanctuary. One of the twitter handles claimed it was from close to Kankai Mata Temple in Gir. Even an IFS officer retweeted the video claiming it to be from Gujarat.

The twitter handle of Chief Conservator of Forest, Wildlife, Junagadh on Monday clarified that a video is viral in the name of Gir. “It is not from Gir. The lions are African and the video is also from some African country The vehicle and language used are also not from Gir,” the department tweeted in an attempt to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The department had in June released the results of a lion census which pegged the number of lions at 674, up from 523 five years ago.Unlike earlier census, the count was estimated not from a Census, but from a population observation exercise called Poonam Avlokan.
