Fishermen in the coastal areas of Gujarat have been warned not to venture into the sea for fishing owing to the possibility of a severe cyclone. Saurashtra and other parts of Gujarat reported strong winds by Friday evening with particular warnings being issued for Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Morbi and Jafrabad.
The Met Department has predicted light rains with the possibility of strong winds up to May 31. It has also warned of the possibility of a strong cyclone between June 4 and 5 near Dwarka, Morbi and Okha. The department fears that the depression may turn into a cyclone and will affect Kutch-Kandla and the neighbouring regions before moving towards Rajasthan where it is expected to disperse.
A Signal 1 has been issued for Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Jafrabad and Morbi coastal areas as strong currents were witnessed. Signal 1 means a low pressure area is forming at sea and the wind speed could be 60km/hr. It is a warning of high wind speed but also means that the port may not be affected.
