Surat/Ahmedabad: Grishma Vekariya murder convict Fenil Goyani has challenged the death sentence awarded to him in the Gujarat High Court. The court has admitted the plea.
Fenil had been sentenced to be hanged till death by the Sessions court in Surat. While pronouncing the verdict, the court had termed the case “rarest of rare”.
The state government had then approached the HC for confirmation of the the death penalty.
The crime of passion
Fenil (20) had accosted college student Grishma Vekariya (21)near her house in Pasodara area of Surat on February 12 and held her hostage in full public view with a knife to her throat. He was furious at her for rejecting his love.
Her mother, brother and uncle made emotional pleas to him to release her, but he stabbed her and slit her throat. She died on the spot.
Fenil tried to escape, but was overpowered and handed over to the police.
The entire incident was captured on video.
In May this year, the Surat court handed him death penalty for the murder.
