Several Congress leaders in the city were detained by the Ahmedabad police after they began a padyatra to protest the rise in petrol and diesel prices across the country. The protest was part of the party’s plan to stage their opposition across the country against the burgeoning petrol and diesel prices. The price of the fuel has been increased for more than 20 days so far. For the first time the price of petrol is now higher than that of diesel in some cities of the country.
In Ahmedabad, the protest was to take place from Sardarbaugh to Ellisbridge Townhall. But the police detained several Congress leaders including GPCC chief Amit Chavda, MLA Gyasuddin Sheikh, Corporator Shahnawas and 50 other workers as they reached the venue.
As the leaders were detained, Congress workers tried to block the police van by laying on the road. The padyatra also threw social distancing norms to the wind.
It should be noted that the police had not given its permission for the yatra but the Congress decided to take i t out anyway. Since the padyatra lacked the police nod, the detention of the leaders was a foregone conclusion.
The party is carrying out similar protests across the state and has also started the ‘Bolshe Gujarat’ campaign to protest the rising prices of fuel. The campaign in social media will see the Congress highlighting the troubles of the people from 10 am to 5 pm.
