The government has decided not to charge a late fee for birth and death registration from March 4 to July 31. This means any birth/death that happened or may happen during the said period will not be charged a late fee in case there is delay in registering the same, media reports said.

It should be noted that the country had gone into a lockdown from March 25 to May 31 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and so several government offices had also shut down. This had resulted in citizens being unable to get a birth/death certificate for birth and deaths that happened during the said period.

Usually, the birth/death registration is to be carried out within a period of 21 days and a late fee is charged if it is registered between the 22nd and 30th day of the birth/death happening. Any further delays results in the person having to produce an affidavit before it can be registered.

Since there could be many delays due to the lockdown the government has also decided to do away with the need for an affidavit in case it is delayed for over a month, the reports said.
