New Delhi: Amid rising cases of Covid-19, including the ones caused by Omicron variant, the Union Health Ministry has given approval to two vaccines and an anti-viral drug, all in a day.

The vaccines that have got emergency use approval are Corbevax, which is India’s first indigenously developed RBD protein sub-unit vaccine against Covid-19, Union Health minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted on Tuesday.

Made by Hyderabad-based Biological-E, Corbevax is the third vaccine developed in India, the others being Covaxin and ZyCov-D.

The other vaccine to get approval is nanoparticle vaccine Covovax, to be manufactured in India by Pune-based Serum Institute of India.

Besides the two vaccine, the government has also given emergency use approval to antiviral drug Molnupiravir. To be manufactured by 13 companies, it has been approved for restricted use under emergency situation for treatment of adult Covid patients who are at high risk of progression of the infection, said Mandaviya

“All these approvals will further strengthen the global fight against the pandemic,” he said, adding, “Our Pharma Industries are asset for the entire world.”

The government has announced vaccination of children aged 15-18 years from January 3 and third dose of vaccine for healthcare and frontline workers from January 10.
