From last several years, Modi govt was thinking to protect gold buyers. In July, Ram Vilas Paswan hinted to make gold jewellery hallmarking compulsory. On Friday, the government said in an announcement to make Hallmarking for gold jewellery and artifacts would be mandatory from January 15, 2021.
Union Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said the decision was taken to ensure quality. The department of consumer affairs will issue a notification by January 15, 2020 for making gold hallmarking mandatory. However, one year period will be provided for implementation of this decision to enable jewellers clear their existing stock.
As of now, Vibrant state Gujarat has only 18 hallmarking centre. In these centres average 200 means 3600 jewellery per month gets hallmarking. Last year total 4.5 cr jewellers use this service.
