As many as 10 Gujarat ATS team members who are part of the probe into the alleged attempt to kill BJP leader Gordhan Zadaphia have tested positive for COVID-19. Media reports quoted ATS Assistant Commissioner of Police KK Patel as saying that so far 10 ATS personnel involved in the investigation have tested positive.
Patel said among those who tested positive are an inspector, a sub-inspector, constables and clerks. After so many people tested positive, more than 12 other ATS staff members, including senior officials, have been quarantined.
Accused Irfan Sheikh tested positive
Irfan Sheikh, the alleged sharpshooter of Chhota Shakeel gang who was nabbed by ATS had tested positive on August 20 for COVID-19. After the pandemic began, it is mandatory for all those who are arrested to undergo a COVID-19 test.
The state Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on August 19 arrested Sheikh from one Hotel Vinus near Relief Road. Sheikh’s friend who was with him escaped. Later, ATS personnel who came in contact with him were also tested. Sheikh was moved to Civil Hospital for treatment after testing positive.
How was Irfan Sheikh nabbed?
The joint team of ATS and Ahmedabad Crime Branch went to nab the sharpshooters early at 4 am on August 19. The team among others included a DIG and 2 ACPs.
One of the sharpshooters fired at the cops but no one was injured. The cops also recovered two 9 mm pistols from Sheikh. Sheikh, a sharpshooter, was allegedly sent to Gujarat by Chhota Shakeel to kill BJP leaders, mainly former Minister of State for Home Gordhan Zadaphia.
What has investigations revealed so far
Muna Jhingada, the man who fired at underworld don Chhota Rajan in Bangkok, is believed to be behind the plan to kill BJP Vice-President Gordhan Zadaphia, investigations revealed.
The ATS also found that Jhingada is in Pakistan and the conspiracy to kill Gordhan Zadaphia was planned there. The ATS has also detained five people who allegedly provided Sheikh with weapons to carry out the killings.
Four of the detained belong to Maharashtra while one belongs to Karnataka.
