In an unfortunate incident, a leopard from Gir forest division attacked a three-year-old girl in Junagadh district resulting in her death. The incident happened in Devli village under the Jamvala range of the Gir-West forest division at a farm.
Forest officials on Sunday said that the girl was playing in the field when a leopard suddenly attacked her. After attacking the leopard dragged the girl to some distance.
Junagadh’s Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Dushyant Vasavada said that the animal attacked the girl when her parents, who belong to the Nandurbar district of Maharashtra, were cutting sugarcane in the field. The deadly attack resulted in the death of the girl on the spot, he added.
The official further said that efforts are afoot to trap the leopard in the area and cages have been set up in the area.
In a separate incident, an adult leopard that was hit by a speeding vehicle died on the spot at Mindhabari village in Vansda taluka of Navsari district last week. Notably, a passerby spotted the carcass of the animal and alerted the villagers. The villagers thereafter informed the forest department about the incident.
After this, a team from the forest department arrived at the spot and sent the carcass to Vansda Veterinary Hospital for postmortem. Notably, the dead leopard was a nine-year-old male and sustained multiple injuries, including on head, which resulted in its death. The big cat was cremated after the post-mortem.
