Ahmedabad: Fuel prices in the country continued their ascent on the first day of the week. Both petrol and diesel have been touching fresh peaks for the past few days.
While petrol prices had crossed the mark of 100 in Ahmedabad last week, diesel did so on Sunday after a hike of 38 paise, On Monday, too, both the fuels witnessed a fresh price rise.
Diesel now costs Rs 100.51 after an increase of 38 paise on Monday.
The fuel that was priced at around Rs 80 in January this year has seen a 25 per cent surge in prices so far this year.
The price of petrol, which had hit Rs 101 per litre on Sunday increased to Rs 101.29 a day later.
The price of crude oil in the international market is the highest in three years. However, even when its prices were low, the Centre had refused to reduce the fuel prices in India. It may be noted that while the excise duty, levied by the Centre is Rs 32.90 per litre of petrol and Rs 31.80 for diesel. This is a sharp rise from Rs 22.98 for petrol and 18.83 for diesel in March 2020.
In addition to this, the Gujarat government levies 20.1 per cent VAT on petrol and 20.2% on diesel. This is besides a 4% cess on both fuels.
