Former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela has tested positive for COVID-19 in the state. Vaghela had shown mild symptoms of the disease and has been quarantined at home as of now but he may be moved to a hospital in case his condition worsens.
Vaghela has been in the news recently for his efforts to help COVID-19 patients in the city who were facing difficulties in getting themselves tested or admitted to hospital. Vaghela had got a lot of positive press for his efforts in helping the patients and he had later visited the SVP Hospital and interacted with the relatives of the patients assuring them of all help.
The veteran politician had on June 22 resigned from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after he was removed as president of the state party unit. He was also annoyed over the cross-voting by the lone NCP MLA in Gujarat in the recently-held Rajya Sabha elections. NCP MLA Kandhal Jadeja had voted for the BJP going against the party whip that had asked him to support the Congress. Vaghela had joined the NCP in 2019, two years after quitting the Congress. The cross voting and abstaining from voting by the two BTP MLAs had helped the BJP win three of the four Rajya Sabha seats.
