San Fransisco: Days after reports of likely rebranding of Facebook, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the parent company would now be called Meta.
The annoucement comes amid several controvesies in which Facebook is currently mired and is seen as its attempt to move towards its ambitious plans to build a world of virtual reality.
“We’ve learned a lot from struggling with social issues and living under closed platforms, and now it is time to take everything that we’ve learned and help build the next chapter,” said Zuckerberg, adding, “I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same, still about bringing people together, our apps and their brands, they’re not changing.”
Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will be now under the parent company ‘Meta’.
The company had announced it will create 10,000 jobs over next five years in the European Union to help build the metaverse.
However, critics lashed out at the company for the name change. “Their meaningless name change should not distract from the investigation, regulation and real, independent oversight needed to hold Facebook accountable,” said an activist group called The Real Facebook Oversight Board.
