England collapses for just 112 runs in first innings against India


England on Wednesday collapsed to a miserable score of 112 in their first innings in the third Test against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Batting first, the England batting lineup appeared clueless against the spin attack by Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin.

The in-form Patel and Ashwin left the England team struggling as wickets kept on falling at regular intervals. England lost four wickets in the opening session before giving in to the Indian bowlers in the second session.

Axar Patel bowled 21.4 overs in which he took six wickets and gave 38 runs. Ashwin gave 26 runs and took two wickets. He bowled 16 overs. Ishant Sharma, who is playing his 100th Test did not took long to take the first wicket of the match—Dom Sibley.

Axar Patel took the wicket of opener Zak Crawley, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Ben Foakes, Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad. Ashwin took the wicket of Joe Root, Ollie Pope and Jack Leach.

India begins batting

After decimating England to 112 runs in 48.4 overs, India started its batting. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opened the innings for India. England bowled five overs till dinner break and India is batting at a score of 5 runs without the loss of any wicket.

While Rohit Sharma played 15 balls and scored 5 runs that include a boundary, Shubman Gill is yet to score a run and has plated 15 balls. Notably, Gill survived on 0 as Ben Stokes grounds the ball while taking a catch at 2nd slip off Stuart Broad’s bowling. India is currently trailing by 107 runs.

Motera Stadium renamed

The Motera cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, the largest in the world, has been renamed as Narendra Modi Stadium. The stadium which was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind ahead of India vs England 3rd Test on Wednesday was renamed on the same day.

The stadium can seat 1.32 lakh spectators. But in line with the COVID-19 safety protocols, only 55,000 fans will be allowed to watch the match live.
