Centre sanctions 250 electric buses for Gujarat


The Union government on Friday announced that it has sanctioned 670 electric buses for Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Chandigarh.

This apart, the government also announced that it has sanctioned 241 charging stations for cities spread across Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Port Blair.

The sanctions have been made under phase-2 of the FAME India scheme. The information regarding the approval by the Centre was revealed by Union heavy industries minister Prakash Javadekar.

Gujarat gets 250 electric buses

Of the 670 electric buses sanctioned, Gujarat has been sanctioned 250 buses. Of the 250 buses for Gujarat, 150 buses have been sanctioned for Surat Municipal Corporation, whereas the remaining 100 electric buses have been sanctioned for Rajkot. Also, 50 charging stations have been sanctioned for Surat.

Similarly, Maharashtra will get 240 buses. Of the 240 electric buses, 100 buses each have been sanctioned for MSRTC and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport. The remaining 40 buses has been sanctioned for BEST in Mumbai.

This apart, 100 electric buses have been sanctioned for Goa’s Kadamba Transport Corporation. The government said the electric buses will help Goa in protecting the environment as well as improve mobility.

The government has sanctioned 80 electric buses for the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

As far as charging stations are concerned, they will come up in Indore (76), Tiruchirapalli (25), Port Blair (10), Kollam (25), Thiruvananthapuram (27), Malappuram (28) and Surat (50).

What did Prakash Javadekar say?

The Union minister said: “I have been using an electric vehicle since the past one year and I am very happy with that. In one unit, it runs around 10 km and the fuel cost comes to around Rs 1-1.20 per km. Now variants (of electric vehicles) are available in all price range.”

The minister further said: “In line with the vision of PM Modi to push for eco-friendly public transportation, the FAME scheme was launched two years ago. Already, 450 electric buses are plying in various cities. Now, we have sanctioned another 670 electric buses.”
