The Election Commission has announced dates for 55 Rajya Sabha seats spread over 17 states set to be vacated in April will be conducted on 26 March. The EC told that the tenure of Rajya Sabha members elected from 17 states ends in April. Prominent among those retiring are Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Union minister Ramdas Athawale, Congress veteran Motilal Vora, former union ministers Vijay Goel and Kumari Selja, and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh.
According to the commission, the notification of the election will be issued on March 6 and the last date for nomination on March 13, scrutiny of nomination papers on March 16 and withdrawal of nomination on March 18.
Members elected from Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal will retire on April 2 while the tenures of the members of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Manipur, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal will be on April 9 and Meghalaya. The tenure of its members will end on 12 April.
While seven vacancies are from Maharashtra, six are from Tamil Nadu, followed by five from West Bengal and Bihar, four each from Odisha, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, three each from Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, two each from Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Jharkhand, one each from Himachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya.
