Some protestors tried to hurl eggs in the political rally of JV Kakadia who is contesting from Dhari seat. Kakadia was in Surat as part of the bypolls campaign.
Surat has a large population that originally belongs to Saurashtra and they considerably influence the outcome of polls in Saurashtra region of which Dhari is a part.
As a result, BJP’s Dhari candidate was in Surat for political campaigning for the bypolls.
BJP hard organised a Vijay Vishwas Sammelan at Surat’s Yogi Chowk for JV Kakadia. As the meet was on, several unknown people hurled eggs at the meet and ran away.
Though an inquiry has been ordered, a formal complaint has not been made. This is not the first time that a BJP event in the city is facing opposition.
Not the first time BJP event sees trouble
The area is dominated by the Patidar community and saw great support for the PAAS agitation. Several such incidents were reported at the height of the PAAS agitation.
JV Kakadia is the former MLA from Congress who defected to the BJP ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. Several voters who are registered as voters with Dhari seat live in Surat’s Varaccha Yogi Chowk- Simarada area in large numbers.
It was to attract these voters that the BJP had held the Vijay Vishwas Sammelan on Sunday in Surat. Many locals had opposed the organising of such political events due to COVID-19 pandemic while others were opposed to the BJP giving tickets to a Congress turncoat.
Bypolls in Gujarat and how JV Kakadia came to BJP
The eight vacant assembly constituencies are Abdasa, Limdi, Karjan, Dangs, Kaprada, Morbi, Gadhda and Dhari which will go to polls on November 3.
Initially, four MLAs of the Congress resigned in the run-up to the Rajya Sabha polls but by the time the polls were held, four more had resigned.
This had helped three candidates of the BJP win the Rajya Sabha polls while only one of the Congress sailed through.
