A New York court has found former US President Donald Trump guilty of sexual harassment. A former magazine columnist, E. Jean Carroll, accused him in 1990 of sexual harassment and defamation by calling her a liar. Experts say that Trump’s plan to contest the US presidential election next year may get a big blow due to this decision.

Carroll, 79, sued Trump last year, alleging that he raped her in the changing room of the luxury Bergdorf Goodman store on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue in 1996. The former columnist for Elle magazine also claimed that Trump defamed her when he called her “a complete con job” after she went public with the allegation in 2019.
The court ordered former President Trump to pay 5 million dollar as compensation to Carroll. Carroll alleged that Trump raped her in the dressing room of a department store in Manhattan in 1996. Carroll first mentioned this incident in a book in 2019. The court has dismissed the rape charge by Carroll. But has upheld other complaints filed by the victim.
Statement by Trump
The court has ordered Donald Trump to pay 5 million dollar to Carroll. Trump will pay 3 million dollar for defamation and 2 million dollar for misconduct, which Trump committed in the 90s. After the verdict of the court, Donald Trump has reacted on his social media platform. He wrote, “I absolutely do not know who this woman is. This decision is tantamount to an insult.”
At the same time, the former president’s spokesperson has issued a statement saying that this is a ‘campaign’ against Trump by the Democratic Party, which is politically motivated fake case. Trump’s team has said that they will further appeal against the decision.
