At a time when the US presidential election is just a month away, incumbent US President Donald Trump, whose political future is at stake in this election, and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19.
Donald Trump, in a tweet on Friday morning, said that both he and Melania have tested positive for the highly contagious viral infection. He said they are under quarantine.
The development comes right in the middle of the US election campaign in which Donald Trump is seeking re-election in a fierce battle with Democrat candidate Joe Biden. Trump has been travelling a lot ahead of the US elections for the campaign.
What did Melania and Donald Trump say?
In his tweet, Donald Trump said, “Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”
Melania Trump wrote, “As too many Americans have done this year, @potus & I are quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19. We are feeling good & I have postponed all upcoming engagements. Please be sure you are staying safe & we will all get through this together.”
In an earlier tweet, Donald Trump had said that they were awaiting their coronavirus test results after close aide Hope Hicks tested positive for coronavirus.
Narendra Modi wishes speedy recovery
Following the tweet by Melania and Donald Trump on their coronavirus positive status, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished a speedy recovery to the US President and First Lady.
He wrote, “Wishing my friend @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and @FLOTUS a quick recovery and good health.”
Donald Trump’s closest-aide tested COVID-19 positive
Hope Hicks, 31, who is the closest-aide of President Donald Trump, have tested positive with coronavirus. She had travelled with the president on Air Force One earlier this week. Trump had even said in an interview on Thursday night that he and the first lady spend a lot of time with her.
Trump’s poll campaign affected
As Donald Trump has tested positive for coronavirus, it is likely to affect his poll campaign. Many are saying that the development is likely to bring his election campaign to a grinding halt. It is likely to impact the results as well with just a month left for the crucial elections.
Although, Trump is expected to get some sympathy votes as well for testing COVID-19 positive, especially when the viral infection has wreaked havoc in the US. The US is the worst affected country when it comes to COVID-19 cases, as well as deaths.
According to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Center, there are 72.77 lakh COVID-19 cases reported in the US, which is the highest in the world. Similarly, 2.07 lakh deaths have been reported in the US alone out of the 10.22 lakh deaths worldwide.
