Domestic flights suspended in India amid coronavirus scare

In a desperate attempt to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus in the country, the Union government has decided to suspend all domestic flights operating in India from Wednesday. The development comes within a few hours of the government implementing its declared suspension of all international flights.

Notably, the total count of coronavirus positive cases in the country has already touched 415 and the number of infections in the country is likely to register a substantial jump as the local transmission of the virus has been reported from across the country.

The Health Ministry has informed that 15.17 lakh passengers have been screened at various airports in the country. However, there was rising pressure on the government to suspend domestic flight services as people complained of poor screening facilities at airports and the risk of spreading the virus. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also criticised the Centre for the delay in implementing a completing ban on flights in the country for the time being.

Since the coronavirus spread its tentacles in the country, the pressure on domestic low-cost airlines continued to rise due to the cancellation of tickets by passengers, poor occupancy, and logistical issues. A report suggested that most Indian airlines will be on the brink of bankruptcy by May-end, if the situation does not improve.

Notably, the government has already suspended train operations in the country to contain the virus.
