Mayor Bijal Patel has responded to the criticism over her not wearing a mask at a function, through social media, stating that she did not wear it as the event was held on the lawns of the Mayor’s Bungalow which is also her residence. It should be noted that all other present at the event where SBI Life Insurance had donated 5000 PPE kits to the AMC had worn a mask. Also the civic body has still not fined the mayor for not wearing a mask at the event.
Patel had found herself at the receiving end of social media users ire and jokes after a photograph of her attending a public event without a mask went viral. Netizens began to question as to why Patel should not be fined Rs200 for not wearing a mask in public. It should be noted that as per the state government’s notification, anyone found to be in public without a mask is to be fined Rs200.
The netizens also questioned as to how can the first citizen of the city be allowed to get away with violating COVID-19 norms.
Citizens questioned as to how Patel, who actively participated in the #HunPanCoronaWarrior campaign by sporting a mask and urging citizens to wear one, could attend a public event without a mask. They also commented on how the mayor seemed to think that the rules were for the common citizen and not her.
