Diamond polishing units and markets in Surat will remain shut till July 19 as the city sees a surge in COVID-19 cases. So far, over 600 diamond polishers have tested positive for COVID-19 in the district. The Surat Diamond Association had appealed to all diamond trading markets and units to remain shut from Tuesday onwards.
Media reports quoted association members as saying that this was the only way to prevent local transmission after a large number of diamond polishing workers particularly from Varachha and Katargam tested positive. He said the shutdown will help arrest the spread of disease and whether it will be extended or not will be decided post July 19.
The units had resumed functioning after two and a half months of lockdown but as cases surged, mainly because workers did not wear masks and maintained social distancing, the civic body had to shut down many units where cases were found.
