Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award renamed after Major Dhyan Chand

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest award in sports in India, would now be called Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Explaining the decision, he said that he had been getting numerous requests for the same from across the country.

Major Dhyan Chand was a hockey legend, known to be the greatest in the sport. He was part of the hockey team that won gold in Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936, which was the era when India dominated the sport.

“I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views. Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award!” Modi tweeted.

The announcement comes a day after the Indian men’s hockey team lifted a bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics and on the day when the women’s hockey team put up a spectacular performance in the play-off for bronze. Both the teams have had an impressive run at the Tokyo Olympics.

Social media users welcomed the decision, saying that it was befitting for a sports award to be named after a sports legend. However, some called for the Narendra Modi stadium in Motera in Ahmedabad, too, to be renamed after a sportsperson.

“Rajeev Gandhi cricket stadium should known as Sachin Tendulkar stadium and Narendra Modi stadium should know as Mahendra Dhoni stadium,” read one tweet.
