- Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal says girl was assaulted by illegal liquor sellers, issues notice to Delhi police
New Delhi: In a horrifying incident that once again highlights the lack of safety for women in Delhi, a 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped and later tonsured and paraded on the street in Kasturba Nagar area wearing a garland of chappals. Her face was blackened by the perpetrators.
A video of the woman being paraded amid cheers by a crowd of mostly women has now gone viral on social media.
While police say the incident was a result of personal enmity, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal has alleged that the woman was gang-raped by illegal liquor sellers in Kasturba Nagar.
In a tweet, she wrote, “A 20-year-old girl was gang-raped by illegal liquor sellers in Kasturba Nagar. She was tonsured, made to wear a garland of chappals and paraded in the area with blackened face. I am issuing a notice to Delhi police. All guilty men and women be arrested and the girl and her family be provided security.”

In another tweet, Maliwal said she met the girl who told her that 3 men had raped her and women standing nearby kept instigating them. “The wounds on the girl’s body are inhuman. She was tonsured and her face was blackened and she was paraded in the entire area. The terror of illegal liquor sellers has increased. The police must tighten the noose around them,” she tweeted.
