Death toll due to coronavirus increases to 7 in Gujarat, total tally touches 88


The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Gujarat has increased to 88 till Thursday evening after six fresh cases were reported in the state in the last 24-hours. The death toll due to the deadly virus also increased to seven from the earlier six, after a 52-year-old man died in Vadodara making it the first coronavirus-linked death from the city.

The deceased, a resident of Nizampura area of the city, had a travel history of Sri Lanka and was admitted to SSG Hospital in Vadodara on March 19 with symptoms akin to coronavirus.  Notably, four family members of the deceased have also tested positive for the virus and are undergoing treatment.

According to the state health department, the total tally of coronavirus cases is highest in Ahmedabad. So far, 31 positive cases have been reported from Ahmedabad out of 633 people tested for the virus. It has also recorded three deaths and the union government has already declared it as a coronavirus hotspot.

Surat has reported 12 cases so far, followed by 11 cases in Gandhinagar and 10 cases in Rajkot. Vadodara has reported nine cases of the virus, Bhavnagar seven cases, Porbandar three cases, and Gir-Somnath two cases. One case has been reported each from Kutch, Mehsana, and Panchmahals.

Apart from the three deaths reported in Ahmedabad and one death in Vadodara, two deaths have been reported in Bhavnagar and one death has been reported from Surat.

In all, 1,789 cases have been tested for coronavirus across Gujarat, whereas seven confirmed cases that had tested negative for the virus twice in 24 hours have been discharged after following the set guidelines.  Two people who are under active treatment for the virus in the state have been put on a ventilator.

The health department also informed that 18,852 people have been kept under quarantine till Thursday evening.
