A day after a Dalit couple in Madhya Pradesh consumed poison against an anti-encroachment drive, the state government transferred Guna District Magistrate S. Vishwanathan and Superintendent of Police Tarun Nayak.
A video of the incident showed the police hitting the Dalit man with a baton and others trying to save him.
The video was also shared by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who said “our fight is against this mindset and injustice”.

The couple is reportedly stable and police said they had to use force as they resisted eviction.
Former Chief Minister Kamal Nath also targeted Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government on the issue.
Kamal Nath questioned the jungle raj and asked if the police was brutal because the couple in question were Dalit? He also said that legal recourse could have been taken to address the issue of illegal encroachment.
Media reports quoted Guna district collector S Vishwanathan as saying that the farm land was reserved for a government model college. Rajkumar Ahirwar and his wife Savitri were working on the land that was encroached by one Gabbu Pardi.
He said the couple drank poison at the behest of those who encroached on the land.
