Cyclonic storm Asani forms over Bay of Bengal, set to intensify further tomorrow

Kolkata: The Asani cyclonic storm that has developed over southeast Bay of Bengal, is likely to intensify further on Monday, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The department predicted that Asani would develop into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday afternoon.

“It is very likely to continue to move northwestwards till 10th May evening and reach westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast,” the IMD report said.

The wind speed is likely to be around “105-115 gusting to 125” on Monday. Asani is likely to lose speed on Tuesday and further on Wednesday before reducing to a deep depression by Thursday.

 

Rains expected in West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra

According to IMD, the cyclonic storm is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall at a few places with heavy rainfall at isolated places in coastal Odisha and coastal areas of north Andhra Pradesh.

Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea.

The administration in all the three states has been placed on high alert for this week.
