A former judge of the Madras High Court CS Karnan was arrested by the Chennai Police on Wednesday. CS Karnan was arrested for his offensive comments on women judges and wives of judges.
It is alleged that CS Karnan made defamatory and offensive comments against high court and Supreme Court judges, their wives and then uploaded it online on YouTube. Recently, the Madras High Court had severely lambasted Chennai Police for not taking any action in the case.
CS Karnan controversial history
CS Karnan, in 2017, became the first sitting high court judge to be sent behind the bars. He was awarded six months imprisonment for contempt of court, while he was a judge of the Calcutta High Court.
A seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by then Chief Justice JS Khehar had asked the West Bengal police chief to take him into custody. He evaded arrest for weeks after being sentenced to jail until he was tracked down through his mobile phone.
He was also the first sitting High Court judge to appear before the Supreme Court. He was first appointed a judge of the Madras High Court in 2009. He was transferred to the Calcutta High Court in 2016. He wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then President Pranab Mukherjee accusing senior judges of corruption.
CS Karnan has in 2019 also contested the general elections as a candidate of the party floated by his in 2018—the Anti-Corruption Dynamic Party.
